The story of Seabiscuit lives on in the heart of America. Everyone loves the tale of this stocky, knobby kneed racehorse who triumphed over adversity to become one of the greatest champions of the 20th century. During the 1930’s as America struggled to overcome the Great Depression, the determined spirit of this unlikely victor reflected the mood of the nation. After setting a track record at Santa Anita in 1940, the spectacular racing career of this legendary thoroughbred came to an end. Seabiscuit was retired to a ranch in Mendocino County’s Redwood Valley, where his memory inspires our winemaking endeavors.

Those same qualities apply to our Seabiscuit Ranch® wines. Made from the award-winning grapes from small premium vineyards, these wines possess full rich aromas and ripe fruit flavors.

Seabiscuit Ranch vineyards are located in Mendocino County on a southern portion of the original Ridgewood Ranch. Located just 20 miles from the coastline, these small, award-winning vineyards are perched at an altitude of 1,000 feet on steep slopes of the Pacific Coastal Mountain range. Vines are nurtured and harvested entirely by hand according to sustainable growing practices.

Grapes from Mendocino County are uniquely flavorful, complex, and well-balanced. Here, warm days contrast with cool nighttime temperatures. These dramatic daily temperature swings offer the qualitative edge to fruit harvested from one of California's northernmost viticultural districts.

Meritage is a word invented by early marketing teams and combines merit and heritage to define the category of wine blended from the traditional five noble Bordeaux grape varieties. In winemaking, we selected our Superfecta combining no less than four of the noble varietals and blending them to create a winning combination of an exceptionally super wine.
